New Year!

It’s New Year’s Eve, and before heading out to celebrate, I poked into my blog. It was disheartening to realize that this is only my fourth post in 2013. Lots of ways to interpret that…you can make up your own story, but it is what it is…4 posts. Will 2014 be the year that I …

My First DNS

It happened two months ago, but it’s worth documenting…my first “Did Not Start” (DNS). I was registered for the Big Sur Trail Marathon this fall, but I don’t know what I was thinking. Well, to be honest, I know what I was thinking. I was hoping that putting a race on the calendar, and paying …

Salmon Marathon 2012 for State #11

11 down, 39 to go! Idaho is checked off the list, as I completed the Salmon Marathon, from Tendoy (the birthplace of Sacagawea) to Salmon, ID. While my performance did not meet my expectations, leaving me feeling disappointed, frustrated, angry, and defeated…anytime I can run a marathon, I really am full of gratitude, although this …

A fabulous night for a moon-run

Feeling discouraged about this nagging Achilles issue, and having skipped my last run to let it rest, I impulsively went out for a run at 9pm tonight with no expectations. I just had to know how it would feel, and I was prepared to stop right away if I felt any discomfort. Boy, was I …

Peak training phase – week #31

On Sunday, I completed a nice 22-mile training run along Coal Creek Trail with target heart-rate sets. Specifically, in the second half of the run, I was scheduled to include a main set of seven 1-mile repeats at a high zone 3 heart-rate. I was able to stay relaxed for most of the run, and …

20-miler for Week #29

Today’s marathon training was a 20-mile endurance run, with some targeted heart-rate work for a main set. I got up early to eat, and to watch Kara Goucher and Shalane Flanagan in the Olympic Marathon. On that tough and rainy course, Shalane finished 10th, and Kara finished 11th, not far from the leader. It was …

Is Chariots of Fire a good running track?

Apparently, some research has been done on this question. Check out the BBC article HERE, and see for yourself. And THIS is another link to a related article. Or, read on for my hack-summary… The research basically determined that it’s an ideal motivational song for getting runners “in the mood” to perform well. It signals …

Sunrise speed

This morning was a nice return to morning running! It’s been quite a while since I’ve enjoyed the peaceful Colorado mornings for a weekday run. For several months, my weekday runs have been after-work or late-night chores…a far cry from the morning running ritual I had established a while back. So, this morning felt great, …

My coach goes ultra this weekend

Good luck to my coach, Craig Howie (of Howie Endurance Project), who is running the Bighorn Mountain 50-mile Wild and Scenic Trail Run on Sunday! He has been a great example of consistency in training, and it has been awesome to see his training data through Garmin Connect. I remember when he asked me to …
