Piriformis Syndrome strikes twice!
By Kevin | August 20, 2008
It seems brothers share more DNA than either of us would like. Both Ryan and I are having to take some time off from training due to Piriformis Syndrome. It’s an annoying thing involving an inflamed Piriformis muscle (runs horizontally, deep beneath the Gluteus Maximus), which puts pressure on the Sciatic nerve. Symptoms are a dull ache in the rear (pain in the ass, literally), which radiates down through the hip and leg, into the foot. While it hasn’t been entirely debilitating, it’s just smart not to push through it at this point. Our training was probably a bit too much, too soon. We’ll heal up over a couple weeks of gentle stretching and anti-inflammatories, then start on a newer, gentler training cycle. In hindsight, a 18 week plan was probably pushing it for Ryan, as his first, and me, after 7-weeks off.
So, it looks like OBX is off the table for us now. Maybe Philly on Nov 23rd is more reasonable. We’ll see how the healing goes for us both!

Hey Kev – I went to the Chiropractor today. He’s been using the “ProAdjuster” in the past and uses it on just about everyone – it’s the new cool thing in this industry I guess – and it works well.
Since we haven’t really been getting anywhere in the past week with this “pain in the butt” – he suggested the old fashion “Manual Adjustment”. He said it was a little more aggressive, but it should help us get back in line and then move back to the ProAdjuster for maintenance.
So, 4 hours after the manual adjustment – I actually feel a little better. Maybe this will help get me back on track (or maybe it’s just that I’ve loosened it up today). We’ll see in the morning…..
