Summer Recovery & Rest!
By admin | June 3, 2008
Although my recovery time has shortened significantly after each successive marathon, I’ve reached a time where I can get some quality rest and recovery before knocking off another state or two this fall. In my last stretch of 3 marathons in 5 weeks, I noticed that I didn’t need as much time to recover and feel “normal” again after the race. I’ve gotten to the point that I’m feeling pretty much “normal” again by the evening of race day, and the little bit of stiffness that’s there to greet me the next morning disappears pretty quickly. A short run for a few miles the next day or two after the marathon actually feels good, and I find I’m ready to run further within 3-4 days.
Nonetheless, with baby #2 on the way around June 24th, I’m happy to go into a non-racing mode for a while, and focus on some possible fall races. I’ll try to maintain around 20-30 miles per week during the summer, and will try to mix in more cross training to improve my overall fitness balance. Mostly, I’ll just be enjoying my 12-week leave from work to spend time with my newly expanding family! I may need to put together some kind of training plan to keep me motivated without a race on the immediate horizon. Speaking of which – I should find out tomorrow if I got into the New York City Marathon by lottery. The lottery selections take place throughout the day tomorrow, so I should know by midnight tomorrow if I got in. Last I saw, chances are about 1 in 60+ that I’ll get in through the lottery. By the way, it’s hard to type with my fingers crossed.
